Optical Afterglows of Short Gamma-ray Bursts and Grb 040924

چکیده
Short-duration Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) (≤ 2s) have remained a mystery due to the lack of afterglow detection until recently. The models to interpret short GRBs invoke distinct progenitor scenarios. Here we present a generic analysis of short GRB afterglows, and calculate the optical lightcurves of short GRBs within the framework of different progenitor models. We show that all these optical afterglows are bright enough to be detected by the Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) on board the Swift observatory, and that different models could be distinguished with a well-monitored lightcurve. We also model the afterglow data of the recently discovered short burst GRB 040924. We find that the limited data are consistent with a low medium density environment which is consistent with the pre-concept of the compact-star merger progenitor model, although the models with a collapsar progenitor are not ruled out. GRBs Optical follow - up observation at Lulin observatory , Taiwan ( ∗ )
— The Lulin GRB program, using the Lulin One-meter Telescope (LOT) in Taiwan started in July 2003. Its scientific aims are to discover optical counterparts of XRFs and short and long GRBs, then to quickly observe them in multiple bands. Thirteen follow-up observations were provided by LOT between July 2003 and Feb. 2005. One host galaxy was found at GRB 031203. Two optical afterglows were detec...
متن کاملGrb Follow - up Observations in the East - Asian Region
— In 2004, we established a Japan-Taiwan-China collaboration for GRB study in the East-Asian region. This serves as a valuable addition to the worldwide optical and infrared follow-up network, because the East-Asia region would otherwise be blank. We have been carrying out imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations at Lulin (Taiwan), Kiso (Japan), WIDGET (Japan) and Xinglong (China). From...
متن کاملThe optical afterglows and host galaxies of three short/hard gamma-ray bursts
Context. Our knowledge of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has significatively improved in the Swift era. Rapid multiband observations from the largest ground-based observatories led to the discovery of the optical afterglows and host galaxies of these events. In spite of these advancements, the number of short GRBs with secure detections in the optical is still fairly small. Short GRBs are common...
متن کاملPhysical Limits of Different Models of Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts
The present common view about GRB origin is related to cosmology, what is based on statistical analysis, and on measurements of the redshifts in the GRB optical afterglows of long GRB. No correlation is found between redshifts, GRB spectrum, and total GRB fluence. Comparison of KONUS and BATSE data about statistics and hard X-ray lines is done, and some differences are noted. Hard gamma-ray aft...
متن کاملGrb 060121: Implications of a Short/intermediate Duration Γ-ray Burst at High Redshift
Since the discovery of the first short-hard γ-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor > 10). A photometric redshift for this event places the...
